BEFORE AND AFTER:BUSE TERIM OFFICE

Before and After Alert: My favorite way to reveal professional tips of the trade. Read on to see how a new design can regenerate an old interior.

AFTER

Although 5 whole years have passed over this renovation ,every moment of it stays in my memory quite vividly as it was a very special Project in many ways.

*****************************************************

First of all, it was a great beginning of a client architect relationship that has come to last till now with a total of 13 projects so far.
Another reason that made this renovation particularly special was the history of the building which dates back to the early 1900s.

With a past of over 100 years, the BRAUNSTEİN apartment had its share of aging. The challange was to design the first office of a very young and famous blogger in such an old space.
------------------------------------------------------
Although the client was the mere reflection of youth and energy, she believed in the aura of the past. That is why, the main idea was to balance the old and new  by mixing significant old structural details with new and easy to use materials. The process began by tearing apart useless layers to bring about the main historic elements.
The cratfsmanship of the brick walls and vaulted ceilings was striking.

AFTER

The initial
Goal was to design an eye catching entry with a dynamic character.
The colors and materials were selected together with Buse Terim, the blogger herself.
The focus was to have the energy in the center and have everything radiate from it with bits and surprises in small bundles.

Peeling the old floorings which have been layered through the years required a great deal of time and energy.Once this challenge was complete, clear epoxy was hand poured on to the bare concrete floor.

THE PROCESS

THE PROCESS

All the original doors and windows were kept and restored with minor handling and paint.Only the kitchen door was replaced with a glass door , dressed with custom designed macaroon stickers.

AFTER

The old hexagon window glass was all broken so we decided to have colorful pieces of glass made by a local glasswork studio specializing in antique pieces.Painting the vaulted ceilings all white after tearing down chips and old paint expressed the charming structure and resulted in a higher feeling space.

---No matter the size, I believe, a renovation job that is true to the characteristic architecture is always intriguing, so it was a job worth all the hard work!!!---

KITCHEN NOOKS

Are you having BREAKFAST with your family or DINNER with close friends?Either way, the best setting will be a kitchen nook with a built- in bench and a dining table.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally ,I am a big fan of the kitchen nooks, so, I will never miss an extra space to design one in any kitchen project.

NOOKS will bring character to any kitchen with their individual designs and colors. The size and the shape of a nook generally depends on your spatial availability. Preferably, window sides are great to build nooks .Noone likes to block daylight with top cabinets, so, a nook is always a great solution in a kitchen with spare windows and enough room. And also, who can deny the charm of having a freshly brewed morning coffee in a window nook???

No matter the size, a kitchen with a nook will always be more charming because, it will be a perfect gathering spot for all members of your family. So, make sure you tuck one and style it up!!!

Mostly, nooks are designed with a bench and chairs or stools around a dining table. L shaped benches are very common as getting in and out is quite easy. But, I recommend using a U shaped bench if you have enough space to utilize.A spacious nook will always look GRAND.

A TIP TO KEEP IN MIND:  Try to place a round , oval or a curved cornered table if your space is limited.

AND DON'T FORGET:Round tables work best with square layouts whereas oval and rectangle shaped tables work best with more linear shaped nook spaces.

I often design NOOKS with built-in benches as they are always great for storage! You can have drawers or cabinets under your cushions to pile away extras of any kind...

Although,"Styling A Nook" is another great topic for a future blog, I will confess that my favorite nooks are designed white lacquered wood furniture and vibrant colored cushions ,pillows and accessories.

GUEST POST:WALLPAPER ISN'T JUST FOR WALLS--GRAHAM&BROWN

Gorgeous wallpaper designs may look wonderful on your walls, but they can also be used in other areas of the home for a quirky, alternative twist to your interior design. Wallpaper can be used in plenty of practical ways to spruce up your home without papering all your walls.

Whether you’re working with leftovers and offcuts, or you’re buying a fresh roll to get creative, we’ve put together some top tips and inspiration ideas to fuel your next project.

Before you get started - know your adhesives

Depending on where you’re applying your wallpaper, you’ll need the correct type of glue for the job. It sounds simple, but that dry glue stick that’s lurking in the back of your stationery drawer is certainly not fit for the job!

Consider purchasing a reliable waterproof adhesive. An all-purpose glue will allow you to stick your wallpaper to anything from wood, to glass and even material.

 Room 1: The kitchen

There are many ways to brighten up your kitchen with a few bits of wallpaper. For a flash of color, why not choose a vibrant, contrasting design to line your cupboards and drawers? Every time you open your cupboards you’ll be greeted with a cheerful burst of uplifting color, perfect for quelling the stress you feel when cooking a meal for your entire family!

Consider this Fabulous Pearl & Teal Wallpaper By Graham & Brown.

Room 2: Living room

This stunning lined bookcase would look perfect in your living room and provides an easy way to update a mundane feature in your home. Perhaps you could even have a different design for each compartment to reflect what type of books are kept in each section?

Remember, the idea is to make your bookcase stand out, so don’t be afraid of applying a design that is completely different to your current wallpaper.

Room 3: Corridor

Forget about borders and dado rails, there’s an even more impressive way to jazz up the passageways of your home. This beautiful staircase features a small strip of wallpaper on each step and creates a kitsch, ‘doll house’ style, completely transforming the look and feel of your home.

If you have a wooden staircase that has seen better days, but you can’t face the task of sanding down and lacquering each step, this could be a faster and more affordable alternative. Simply paint your bannister and steps in a neutral shade, even white will do, and get to work with the most wonderful patterned paper you can find. Although each step doesn’t need to match, you should try and stick to similar colors for a running theme that will pull the look of your staircase together.

Room 4: Dining room

Upcycle some old containers and tin cans to create gorgeous homemade table decorations, such as vases. A little bit of wallpaper can go a long way when you’re creating these wonderful centerpieces. Intricate patterns work wonderfully on these stunning recycled pots, so pick eye-catching designs that will draw your guests’ attention to your hand-crafted feature.

So what are you waiting for? We’ve given you plenty of ideas to get you started, but this is just the tip of the iceberg! From lampshade coverings to wallpaper headboards, the possibilities are endless when you let your imagination run wild.

Check out Graham & Brown for their vast selection of beautiful wallpaper here.

BLACK AND WHITE STRIPES

Who can deny the aesthetic royalty of black or white?? And more than that, who can resist the chic combo of BLACK and WHITE??

IMG_2285.JPG

VIA PAPERI AND CO

For real, I can merely say that the classic beauty of these two contrasting colours is irresistible, especially when they are used together on walls or ceilings in the form of stripes...

IMG_2290.JPG

Black and white striped wallpapers are quite common and are almost always in fashion. The major issue is how to implement it to your own space and design.

IMG_2282.JPG

VIA A.CLORE INTERIORS

If you plan to cover all the walls of a space with B&W striped wallpapers,I suggest to dress small spaces. For example, in a powder room, don't hesitate to cover all the walls and even your ceiling with stripes .It can only get less boring in a place where guests will get to spend less time...

IMG_2301.JPG
IMG_2286.JPG

VIA BETTER DECORATING BIBLE

HOWEVER, if you are planning to use B&W striped wall coverings in a bigger room, I suggest you accent one major wall with it. Otherwise, it can easily make your space too overwhelming. A B&W wall can be great in a livingroom, a study or in a bedroom as a major point of attraction.I even like them in nurseries as long as the stripes complement the entire decoration.

VIA STYLE ME PRETTY

If you want the stripes to blend in more with your space, make sure you go for thinner stripes rather than bold striking thick forms. Clearly, thinner stripes will be less noticeable whereas thick stripes can easily be too distracting!

IMG_2288.JPG
IMG_2284.JPG

VIA DECOHOLIC

+++++Even though many people lean towards using wallpapers when they want b&w stripes, I love to have them painted as well.

This way, you can easily customise your stripes. You don't need to make them all uniform, instead the design could be done with varying thicknesses and in different shapes.

IMG_2300.JPG

No matter how,I definitely believe in the aesthetic power of stripes especially if they are in BLACK and WHITE.

IMG_2298.JPG

VIA APARTMENT THERAPY

PLUS, any colour will work great with black and white , so DO NOT FEAR, a striped wall or ceiling will never dominate your overall colour theme.Just add any accessories, fabrics or even furniture made of red, purple, blue or green and you will see how both black and white stripes will further complement your choice of colours.

WALL PANELLING

Today, I want to share one of my favourite architectural details:

***WALL PANELLING and MOLDINGS***

Wallpapers and decorative paint are always common methods used by many to create interesting walls. However, I almost always prefer to use wall panelling if there is enough room and budget to give that extra something special...

VIA AT HOME WITH ABBY

First of all,it brings a whole new personality to a wall. And the freedom of design lets me customise it however I want . Divisions , colours and details can all be personalised. That is why, in the end it is a wall with a CHARACTER!!!

IMG_1857.JPG
IMG_1858.JPG

VIA ELLE DECOR

One can go ahead and panel all the walls of a room or make an accent wall by moulding only one.For instance, let's say you want  a statement wall, I suggest dressing a big dining wall, an entry wall or a bedroom headboard wall.

IMG_1861.JPG
IMG_1860.JPG

VIA BOCA DO LOBO

Corridors, long entryways and powder rooms usually have less windows, therefore the abundance of empty wall spaces lets panelling add depth and interest. An ordinary hallway or a foyer can easily turn into a space of attraction if dressed with unique wall panels.

IMG_1862.JPG
IMG_1863.JPG

VIA HOUSE OF TURQUOISE

Panelling is a great way to express your own style. You can choose to keep it simple and have it painted with light colours or you can easily spoil your walls by using gold accents and Renaissance style details.

VIA LUXXU

IMG_1865.JPG

VIA MY DOMAINE

---Bold and dark colours with defined mouldings are also a great way to accent.---

IMG_1856.JPG

VIA BRABBU

Although there are classic ratios for subdivisions , one can easily set the tone by altering the common use.The bigger top piece stacked on top of a shorter piece creates the illusion of a higher ceiling, so it is quite often the preferred kind. Yet, even spaced linear or square divisions can easily make your wall appear wider and longer as well.

IMG_1867.JPG
IMG_1869.JPG

By the way, don't ever panic about losing wall space for artwork, mirrors or even wallpapers. All is possible no matter how dressed your wall is. A major piece of art or even a gallery wall can still be a point of attraction, or a wall covering can easily multiply the feeling of warmth.

IMG_1873.JPG
IMG_1874.JPG

SO, Don't Hesitate and feel what you really want in order to reflect yourself on your walls...
